In its fourth month now, Street Smart has, from among its pool of many kids, its first few students ready for school! As we had shared earlier, Gopi and a few of the kids had started coming to the Bindal school to learn more. Malti and her brother Anil insisted on studying and did not want to paint. With these changes unfolding, we decided it is time now to expand the program and provide a school space for kids who are ready for the move. I am very happy to share that starting Monday, May 16 we are running a school program in a school near Astley Hall between 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.!
Here, we can teach the kids in a more structured environment and besides that have scheduled play-time too. The most exciting part of the school program, however is our little garden! We plan to start a small space where our kids will plant their own herbs, flowers and ferns and take care of them as part of their learning. We hope it will inculcate feelings of care and responsibility within them. In the past, we have seen how they love to take care of stray dogs that they have found on a few occasions. This combined garden space will be a very exciting project that the kids will love to see growing through their care and nurturing.
And there are more updates! The incredible art that our kids create is going to be displayed at a wonderful new cafe in Dehradun, by the name of 124 Bluestone Road. 124 Bluestone is run by a group of young and immensely talented, nice folks who are very eager to help Street Smart in any way possible.
As the final announcement, starting May 16, this blog will now be updated twice a week- Mondays and Wednesdays. Additionally, on Fridays, I will do a photo diary by way of updates.
